Discovering Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
Did you know that Compassion Focused Therapy, or CFT, has its roots in evolutionary psychology and is gaining recognition as a transformative approach to tackling self-criticism, shame, and much more? I recently shared insights into the fascinating origins and core components of CFT in a video for Compassion in a T-Shirt, highlighting its ever-growing relevance in our lives.
The Birth and Essence of CFT
CFT was developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, who saw the potential to enhance traditional therapies in addressing self-criticism and shame. CFT helps calm that critic by activating our compassionate mind, the part of us that nurtures, soothes, and connects. This approach taps into our natural capacity for compassion, fostering healing and growth not just for individuals but communities as well.
Harnessing Emotional Systems for Balance
CFT breaks down the three key emotional systems, together making the Three Circles Model: the threat, drive, and soothing systems. Modern life often overworks our threat and drive systems while neglecting our soothing system. By employing mindfulness, body-based practices, and compassion exercises, we can restore balance, offering practices like guided meditations, emotion regulation, compassionate letter writing, and visualization of your ideal compassionate self.
Overcoming Barriers to Compassion
The path to self-compassion isn't always easy. Many people face "fears, blocks, and resistances to compassion," or FBRs, as they’re called for short. By gently exploring these fears and using compassion-focused imagery and small acts of self-compassion, individuals learn that compassion isn't dangerous, but rather a powerful ally.
The Transformative Potential of CFT
CFT is not just about reducing negative emotions but also boosting resilience and compassion. Decades of research show it reduces shame, self-criticism, and depression, while increasing self-compassion and emotional resilience.
Reflecting on Compassion’s Role
As CFT continues to evolve, it reminds us that compassion is essential for personal healing and growth. I invite you to consider the transformative power of compassion within therapy and life itself.
